How to buy a used motorbike in Ho Chi Minh city?

Foreigners and expats can buy a motorbike in Vietnam. A legitimate bike comes with a Blue card and insurance. The most important document you need to pay attention to is the Blue card. Plus, you must have a license to drive a motorbike in Vietnam. The government allows converting the driver’s license from your country to a Vietnamese one, so you are eligible to drive on Viet roads.

For the Blue card, you should check the following information:

·      Identification number

·      Color of the bike

Those pieces of information should match the bike you’re buying. The owner’s name doesn’t matter. If you want to register the bike under your name, the procedure is a bit messy. In fact, you can drive and resell the bike under the other one’s name with no hassle.

Be aware of fake Blue cards as they are made to make illegal bikes legal. Many bikes can be illegally imported, stolen, or customized. Using these cards, you will be fined when caught.

Bike insurance is super easy to buy. You can ask the vendor to do the service for you. The price for three types of insurance, including the bike, you, and one passenger, is around 200.000 VND.

Final verdict

Buying an old motorbike in Vietnam is not hard. All you need to do is to pay attention to the documents and make sure the bike functions well before you place the cash.
